Dear Year 2,

Just a quick message to say that I am so proud of you all. You are all super stars; staying safe and doing your best every day.
Keep having fun and being your brilliant selves.

From.

Miss Place

P.s. Give your adults at home a hug, too. Just like you, they are working from home; either helping you with your work or doing their own work and helping you, as well. Let them know they are doing a great job, too!

Today’s Live Session

Today’s Live Zoom Subject: Maths

Having begun to learn about sharing and grouping last week, we will remind ourselves of the divide symbol, as we learn about dividing a number by 2. We will think about what this means as well as what it looks like when we share by two.

Early Bird Maths

We begin each day with ‘Early Bird Maths’. It is to support children in becoming more fluent with aspects of maths that we have learnt. Similar ideas are repeated so that children become familiar with the four basic calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).

Whole Class Reading (WCR)

To practise our reading; becoming more fluent and increasing our understanding, we take part in WCR daily. Our objective this term is to retrieve information from a text and record it through writing. This is tricky stuff so there will be lots of opportunities to practise this. As well, there will be a daily challenge to come up with your own questions.

Have a go at the attached, read the text and answer the questions about this piece of text. Then, can you think of any other questions you could ask?

Maths

Check out the live Zoom session at 11AM for today’s Maths.

Watch the video below entitled ”Divide by 2″ via the below link. Listen to the narrator. He will ask you some questions, pause the video when asked and have a go yourself!

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-2/spring-week-4-number-multiplication-and-division-2/

Please send your work to myself via r.place@meadowsideacademy.org

English

LO: To add stage directions (a feature) to an extract of a play script.

Stage directions tell us what is happening on stage while the actors are speaking. It is usually in italics (slanted writing) or/and brackets.

Example below:

With an adult, point out the stage directions (writing in italics) above and talk about what it is telling us.

Read the powerpoint below and, with an adult, think about what the stage directions might be if the story were a play.

Then answer the questions in the file below.

Please send your work to myself via r.place@meadowsideacademy.org

Big Idea – ART AND FINE MOTOR SKILLS

We will learn this week about props. Props are really important in plays because they are objects that help the actors to tell the story.

The people who make the props are very creative. They are able to think up their own ideas of how to make something, as well as follow instructions.

The link below has been sent to use from Miss Brown. She would like you to have a go at creating a paper horse.

Take your time. It will take concentration and careful hands to be successful!

You may need some adult help with the first part.

You will need a pencil and paper/notebook and your special six.

Early Bird Maths

MATHS WORKSHEET HAS NOW BEEN UPDATED (10AM). APOLOGIES – THERE WAS A MARVELLOUS MISTAKE ON THE ORIGINAL SHEET. THE WORD ‘TWO’ SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE GAP QUESTIONS ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE.

Today, watch our pre-recorded maths lesson and complete the worksheet below entitled ‘sharing groups 2’.

Watch the video below entitled ”Make Equal Groups – Sharing” via the below link. Listen to the narrator. He will ask you some questions, pause the video when asked and have a go yourself!

English

Check out the live Zoom session at 11AM for today’s English.

LO: To punctuate sentences [plus challenge: to use conjunctions].

Following on from today’s live lesson, your task is to write six sentences about the story, ‘Stone Soup’. In each sentence you will need to include one of your special six words that you thought of yesterday.

Remember:

  • A capital letter at the start of each sentence.
  • A full stop at the end of each sentence (or an exclamation mark).
  • Finger spaces in between your words (if you have little fingers, I would use two fingers when making your finger space, just to be sure your space is clear!)
  • Do your sentences make sense?
  • Have you included any expanded noun phrases?
  • Have you included any conjunctions? E.g. ‘and’, ‘for’, ‘because’, ‘so’, etc.
  • Could you use a time (temporal) connective?

Big Idea – Geography

Today, we will follow on from our local walk yesterday by exploring different places using Google Earth.

Google Earth shows you an aerial view (or a ‘bird’s eye view’). An aerial view looks down on somewhere.

Follow the link below and then type where you would like to go. The website will let you see anywhere in the world! I like to go to Rome!

LO: To define tier 3 vocabulary.

Today, your job is to create your special 6, using the ebook below.

Your special 6 is a group of 6 words that you really like. You will try to include these 6 words in future writing.

If I were making a special 6, I would include the word, ‘provisions’.

E.g. Provisions – supplies. In this story, ‘provisions’ were supplies of food that the villagers had.

Please send your work to r.place@meadowsideacademy.org

Big Idea – Geography

Look at the PowerPoint below. The first few slides will remind you of what you have already looked at in geography this half term.

The later slides explore ‘where you live’. Where do you live? Is it a town? A city? A village?

Use the PowerPoint to explain to someone at home what a human feature is and what a physical feature is.

Go for a walk around your area (this can be your daily exercise). Take the sheet and a pencil with you. Can you tick any features you see?

Big Idea – Stone Soup activities (English launch)

Above, are some ‘Stone Soup’ themed activities for you to choose from.

Below, is a link to some soup recipes. If you have the ingredients at home, you could have a go at cooking your own soup! If you do, I would love a photo of it to go on our blog!

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/soup-recipes

I made soup at the weekend. It was a sweet potato, chilli and lime soup. However, I put too much chilli in it… it was too hot! I then added some feta cheese to cool it down a little, I hope your soup is tastier than mine. I will have to show our 5R of being resilient and try again next weekend!

The UK is split up into counties. You live in the county of North Yorkshire.

Go onto the internet. Find 5 places in North Yorkshire that look interesting or exciting. North Yorkshire is a very special place!

You may have already been to some of these places before!

LO: To draft the beginning of the story.

Today, you will draft (draft is like your first go) the beginning of your retelling of ‘The Disgusting Sandwich’. Watch the recorded video attached and it will help you to think of the main ideas from the beginning of the story.

Remember to have your work from yesterday with you. Can you include any of your special vocabulary, temporal connectives or conjunctions? Try to aim to include at least one of each!

Big Idea – Geography

Our Big Idea topic this half term is ‘All The World’s A Stage’.

Performing is very special because it is done in all parts of the world.

You can perform on a big stage in front of thousands and sometimes millions of people.

This picture shows ‘The Masked Singer’. It is a show on ITV1 on a Saturday night. Around 5 and a half million people watch it each week!

When you log in to Zoom for your live lessons, I (Miss Place) perform for you. A lesson is a type of show because it has a purpose (to inform and to entertain) and it has an audience (you!)

I don’t have 5 and a half million people watching me though. I aim for 29!

Both of these ‘performances’ are in the UK.

Today in geography, we will learn about the UK.

Read through the PowerPoint with someone at home.

In class last term, you learnt about the continents of the world with Mrs Moriarty and Miss Stockman. Remind yourself about them.

The last slide shows the United Kingdom.

Print out the worksheet below (or ask an adult to draw a rough sketch of the UK if you don’t have a printer). Follow the instructions on the worksheet to colour the UK.
